Picture a woman from Poland who goes to teach English in China, primarily for one year. I don't know a soul, nor do I speak the language. I have no clue about Chinese culture. All I'm certain of is the amount of rice I'm going to eat from now on. Six years later, I tearfully leave China, the place I have learnt to call home. Not without baggage. China changed me. It helped me become more mature, more tolerant and more patient or perhaps it simply made me older. I will never forget this adventure. Sometimes it felt like a life sentence, while at other times like an opportunity to keep exploring. I loved and hated it there equally. I cried as much as laughed. One thing China is very good at is to make even the calmest of us frustrated. We are, after all, outsiders, observers, the 'others'. China depicted in this book can change you like it changed me.
