A Police Officer and a Gentleman: AF 'Michael' Wilcox

'MICHAEL' WILCOX is not well-known but he had a very distinguished career in the police service, starting as a constable in the City of Bristol Police and ending as the Chief Constable of Hertfordshire. The death of his father meant that he left school early, but his shortened education did not stop him applying to Lord Trenchard's new Police College established in Hendon in 1934. His success in the entrance exam required him to transfer to the Metropolitan Police. In 1943, by then an Inspector, he volunteered for the Civil Affairs unit of the Allied Armies. He landed at Salerno and set about 'liberating' towns in southern Italy. He was rapidly promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and found himself doing the lion's share of the work in attempting to reorganise the Italian Police. In the immediate aftermath of the war, he played a key role in the policing of occupied Vienna. On demobilisation he became the deputy Chief Constable of Buckinghamshire and then, after six months, the Chief Constable of Hertfordshire. He served in Herts for the next 22 years. Several of his friends and fellow graduates from Hendon moved on to senior posts in the Metropolitan Police and the Inspectorate of Constabulary. Wilcox had written to his wife during his Army service saying that being a Chief Constable was his ambition as it would allow him to look after her and their children. On retirement he enjoyed a link with the new Criminology Institute at Cambridge publishing a small book on prosecution which is still well regarded. He also took on a variety of temporary posts for the Home Office. This is the story of a man who never pushed himself forward; family was as important to him as the job. Nevertheless, he rose through the ranks by demonstrating his ability and a strong commitment to his role. As Chief Constable he appears to have been popular and respected by those who served under him; while he, in turn, made their welfare a key consideration.

After having many problems with the built-in audiobook player that comes with Apple products I was so happy to find this application. Not only does it accept MP3 files it joins them together. I have experienced numerous problems where an MP4 book will play in iTunes but would not play in the app that comes with my iPhone. This application plays them all flawlessly. And the increased speed is perfect. As one who consumes 2 to 3 audiobooks a week this is just what I needed.

Loved the free version so much, I upgraded to the Pro version. Love how it can play numerous formats. Easy to use, and navigate. Hope in a future update they include the ability to autoplay the next book after the previous one ended. Not all files are always a book, so in those cases this would be perfect, as some files are per chapter from some online sources.

I’ve tried several audiobook apps and this is by far the best for ease of use, great features, and wonderful ui. Everything that you need is available on the main screen and easily accessible. Navigation is easy, settings for customizing are very flexible, and the support for bookmarks is superior. This is the one to buy.

Fits the bill perfectly to play audiobooks ripped from other media: premium version allows bookmarking, reading rate change (the best I've ever seen from .5x through 3x and every variation in between) and sleep timer. Plays files in multiple formats, including mp3s and m4b (audiobook version of m4a). Easy to load books through iTunes file sharing. I haven't tried the wireless method. Well worth the money for the premium version (which you can just purchase outright, but I got it free first, liked it, and almost immediately did the IAP for the pro features). Been looking for a solution since Audible discontinued the feature to play your own iTunes audiobook library and iBooks is inadequate. This is it. Highly recommended. Found this while trying to figure out how to play a library of audiobooks from a favorite author ripped from cassettes and CDs (not available on Audible - always my go-to).
