Tommaso Buscetta, a high-ranking gangster, turns himself in and decides to cooperate with authorities to bring down the Cosa Nostra. Thanks to Buscetta's testimony, the Palermo tribunal successfully brings down several top-ranking members of the Sicilian mafia. Despite the danger that his work inevitably brought upon him, it didn't stop Falcone from continuing his work in both Italy and the United States, virtually eliminating Sicily as a major heroin-trafficking point. In 1992 he was assassinated by members of the group he fought against his entire life.
