It is the saga of the thousands of Jews who were lucky enough to survive and leave the country thanks to the help of diplomats, and also an adventure filled with setbacks and interwoven stories, set between Budapest’s offices and streets, with Hungarian killers from the Arrow Cross Party and the Nazis themselves, with one of their most emblematic leaders in command. Angel Sanz Briz, despite working as a civil servant, managed to apply his convictions and determination to the rule of diplomacy and law: bureaucracy was his tool and a humanitarian ideal the goal that guided his actions. The unexpected turns of events and the obstacles that he had to navigate, putting himself and his family at risk, make up the plot of this exciting book. It also shows how, in contrast, Adolf Eichmann, lieutenant colonel for the SS and the one responsible for the Reich’s deportations, followed German bureaucracy and laws in his strict, inhuman application of ordinances. Eichmann’s plans and the progressive evacuation of all of Hungary are what the Spaniard fought through his ingenuity.
